The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Despite having a new coach this season along with several new players, then facing new opponents in a new location to start the postseason, Oblong High School's softball team carried on like nothing changed, as the Lady Panthers picked up their third straight regional championship Saturday (May 18).

Oblong struck first, when Abbie Dart doubled with one out, then scored on a double by Kenzi McIntosh with two outs to give OHS a 1-0 lead. Woodlawn countered with two runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 2-1 edge, but Oblong came right back with two in the top of the third. Macie Stephens led off the inning with a double then scored on a double by Aireka Burke to tie the game, then Burke scored on a base hit by Dart to give the Lady Panthers a 3-2 lead.

However, Woodlawn countered with two runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead and they would hold their 4-3 advantage until the fifth, when Oblong erupted for three runs. Burke opened the inning by reaching on an error, then she scored on a base hit by Dart to tie the game again. After Kara Reider reached on a dropped third strike to put runners at the corners, McIntosh and Nyah Laino provided consecutive run-scoring hits to give Oblong a 6-4 lead.

Woodlawn would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Panthers were able to hang on for the win.

Dart led OHS at the plate with a double, two singles, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while McIntosh doubled, singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Burke doubled, scored twice and drove in a run, Laino added a base hit and a run batted in, Stephens singled and scored a run, Hannah Meese singled and Reider scored a run.

Jenna Bailey picked up the win in relief, allowing a run on three hits, while walking two and striking out five in four innings of work. Starter Allison Miller went three innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out one.
